Nalla Neram (நல்ல நேரம்): Understanding Tamil Auspicious Timing

By UtilCube Editorial Team · Updated

In Tamil culture, starting important activities at the right time is considered essential for success. Nalla Neram literally translates to "good time" and refers to the auspicious periods during the day when it is considered favourable to begin new tasks — whether it is signing a contract, starting a journey, or performing a puja.

How Is Nalla Neram Calculated?

The day is divided into segments based on the time of sunrise and sunset. The period between sunrise and sunset (daytime) and sunset to next sunrise (nighttime) is each divided into 8 equal parts called Yaama (approximately 1.5 hours each, varying by season).

Certain Yaama periods are considered inauspicious based on the day of the week. The remaining periods are Nalla Neram — the "good time" windows. The three key inauspicious periods to avoid are:

Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்)

Rahu Kalam is a roughly 1.5-hour window each day that is considered unfavourable for starting new activities. It is determined by the day of the week and shifts daily. Many Tamil families check Rahu Kalam before scheduling important events.

Yamagandam (யமகண்டம்)

Another inauspicious period similar to Rahu Kalam, but associated with Yama (the deity of death). Most families avoid starting journeys or important work during this time.

Gulikai (குளிகை)

The third inauspicious period. While less commonly checked than Rahu Kalam, traditional families still avoid this window for important activities.

How Do People Use Nalla Neram Today?

While the practice has deep traditional roots, many modern Tamil families still check Nalla Neram for:

The Cultural Perspective

Many families find comfort in timing important events carefully, and there is a long intellectual tradition behind the astronomical calculations underlying these time divisions.
