The day is divided into segments based on the time of sunrise and sunset. The period between sunrise and sunset (daytime) and sunset to next sunrise (nighttime) is each divided into 8 equal parts called Yaama (approximately 1.5 hours each, varying by season).

Certain Yaama periods are considered inauspicious based on the day of the week. The remaining periods are Nalla Neram — the "good time" windows. The three key inauspicious periods to avoid are:

Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்)

Rahu Kalam is a roughly 1.5-hour window each day that is considered unfavourable for starting new activities. It is determined by the day of the week and shifts daily. Many Tamil families check Rahu Kalam before scheduling important events.
